PLEASE SING ALONG!

Beyond the rim of the star-light

My love is wand’ring in star-flight

I know he’ll find in star-clustered reaches

Love, strange love a star woman teaches.

I know his journey ends never

His star trek will go on forever.

But tell him

While he wanders his starry sea

Remember, remember me.

PLOT SYNOPSIS

Setting: The Bridge of the Federation Starship Pinafore Act I  The Starship Pinafore is in orbit around Ferenginar and being prepared for the arrival of the Admiral, Sir Joseph Porter, Grand Nagus of the Galaxy.

Act I

Ralph Rackstraw, warp core technician 2nd class and recently reinstated to Starfleet after 20 years trapped in a transporter loop, declares his love for Josephine, the daughter of Captain Corcoran. He is supported by most members of the crew with the exception of Dick Deadeye, a Klingon. Buttercup, a Betazoid woman who is on board to sell items to the crew, hints that she knows a secret from Ralph’s past. Captain Corcoran consults his daughter and she tells him that though her heart is given to a crewman, she will do her duty and marry Sir Joseph. Sir Joseph arrives with his entourage and states that a starship crewman is anyone’s equal except his. Ralph, emboldened by Sir Joseph’s statement and the song Sir J wrote for the crew, declares his love for Josephine, but she rejects him. Dejected, he informs his mates that he is prepared to end it all. In a dramatic reversal, Josephine stops him and expresses her love for him. They plan to elope.

Act II

After her final doubts are ironically ended by Sir Joseph, Josephine, aided by the crew and sympathetic aliens from Sir Joseph’s entourage, begins a stealthy exit from the ship to elope with Ralph. They are foiled by the Captain and Deadeye.  Sir Joseph, shocked by the Captain’s language, intervenes and then is even more shocked to learn that Ralph has dared to contemplate marriage with his intended bride. He orders the insubordinate crewman court martialled. Everyone assembles for the trial. Sir Joseph serves as Judge. Deadeye serves as prosecutor and B’sonn is the Defense attorney. After several eloquent pleas and a potentially hung jury, Sir Joseph declares that Ralph stands convicted. Buttercup intervenes by revealing her long held secret. Her information leads to the union of three happy couples!

Production Notes

Back in 1999, NTP boldly went where no G&S aficionados had gone before and set the popular nautical operetta in the Star Trek universe. This year we return to the Alpha Quadrant with a remount of a favourite staging. Our return to outer space is like a return home. Starship Pinafore was a major step forward as the North Toronto Players sought new ways to bring Gilbert and Sullivan to the stage. Star Trek matches G&S for staying power (after 803 series episodes, 14 feature films and 60 years  of merchandizing) and we are excited to bring these two popular icons together again.
